Launching in stages.

I'm going to need to bounce all this off Greg, mind, but I have a thought on the GC launch.

We're going to start up dating on 21 March, as I said yesterday. However, things'll really kick in after six strips/two weeks.

Maybe the thing to do is announce it as prologue, over on Snark, but hold off on advertising/pimping/heavy rotation until April 1, when the chapter one splash page goes up. That way, there'll be five strips in the archive for people to read, giving them some sense of what's going on, and then the actual strip will begin doing interesting things for them.

I'm making up a list of where I want to advertise (I'll see if Som*Pos is willing, I figure, check PvP's cheapest rates, do the Thing on Joey Manley's new adthingy -- stuff like that) as well as see if I can set a date for the (crappy) ad banner I have for Websnark on Comixpedia (I have it purely because that's part of my compensation for doing 'Pedia in the first place) to be swapped for the (hopefully stylish) Gossamer Commons adbanner, and get some traction on April 1st going forward. That's a Friday, so if I can get eyeballs then, and maybe some backtracking, there's a chance I can set some new habits on Monday for people to read this thing.

It's easier to start planning now that I have those six strips in hand to look at. I also do a lot of bouncing in my chair. Greg is good at this. Life is going to rock so much.

Some unsolicited (and perhaps unnecessary) advice: don't start advertising on April 1. There are two reasons for this:

First, you'll lose some readers who will look at it, say "hey, the Websnark guy put together a comic as an April Fool's joke, that's pretty funny", and walk away.

Second, it's a Friday; if you're running a MWF rotation, that's the one day of the week when people are going to have to wait the longest to see new material.

Two-and-a-halfth (because I said there were only two and I'm too lazy to go up and change that), I don't know what actual figures on this are, but it seems to me to be a mistake to start advertising the strip before you start the strip qua story. It seems like the prologue will be the hook, but in all honesty, it probably won't, precisely because it is a prologue; a good hook gets the reader interested in the story, not the backstory. The first strip of Act I will be the real hook, and if people have to wait two days from the first time they see the ad until they get to the hook, they're going to forget about the site in the meantime.

If the March 21 date is set in stone, I'd recommend moving the advertising date to April 3, so that you have that first story strip up when people come looking; if it's not, and you really want to start advertising on April 1, I'd suggest moving the launch up to March 18.

There is one more complaint I have about a launch date of March 21: it's three weeks away. :P
So, so cranky

Another place to look.

...is buzzcomix for a banner ad. It's another option you might want to consider. :)

Also? I think it would be funny to put Ads By Goooogle back on Websnark, advertise Gossamer Commons on Google, and see how recursive you can get. But that may just be me.

personally I reckon that if you ask politely, kurtz may give you a plug in at least the newsbar. he may need to see if he likes the work tho.

Let us know if you want a coupla extra bucks to pay for advertising. otherwise beat up the person holding the pot for the grind!

Look. I'm not using my banner mojo. I have all the banner mojo. I never used it. If you need extra banner mojo, like, so that you need to run stuff for GC *and* Snark? Borrow mojo.

Let me know if there's something I can do to help, I'm all for the cause of Snark.

If you want to become one of my affiliates, that's no problem. I can't guarantee you any spikes in traffic, but I'd do it for free.
