So... I'm a webcartoonist.

Posted on 2005.03.21 at 06:53
Well, technically I'm a webcomics writer. But still.

Gossamer Commons has launched, officially. Greg's art is fantastic, Weds did a great job on the site design, and me? I'm just happy to be there.

Have a look see! This is a very, very happy day!

It's good!

(And I identify with the protagonist already...)

Actually, I do have one comment: in strip 3, panel 2, the "DAMN!" barely shows up to me - it was only on the third read-through that I caught it. I don't know if the image can be changed at this point, but I thought I'd point it out: in my opinion, a little more contrast might be in order.

Other than that - nice work, both of you.

Brilliant!

But must you use -5 point font on all of the information pages? :)

Huuuurm. It's not meant to be -5 -- what browser are you using? We're still testing.

I'm using IE 6.0.2something. The comic itself was fine but when I went to the FAQ and other pages, the print was microscopic. Hence the joke. ;)

I like it very much! I relate to the storyline, and the art is lovely.
And it couldn't have started on a better day. Spring - new beginnings.

Great comic, Mr. Burns! The script so far is superb, and Mr. Holkan's art fits it wonderfully. I eagerly await the creation of the forum!

Very nice work, I look forward to reading it. And, in order to assist that, is there any chance of getting an RSS feed?

Remember, webcartoonists: make it easy for me to keep reading you. RSS. It's just right.

Looks good, man!
but i'd suggest making each installment about that size...It's really an ideal length for it, i think. Just long enough to feel like you've actually read something...

Also, the archive link is screwy when on the creators page.

Later strips are going to be paced for 6-8 panels. But we'll see how it goes.

And we'll have a look at the link. Thank you!

Much yay!

A most compelling beginning.

(On a site design note, it seems you're using the alt tag for amusing commentary on the panels; if you want this tag to actually show up for all browsers, adding a title tag is good. Standards-wise, the alt tag is only intended to replace an image that can not be displayed for some reason, and a couple browsers treat it like that... which is slightly annoying, since a lot of people use it for captions. And of course, then there's other browsers that ignore the title tag altogether. Sigh.)

Well, I'm not hooked. I have issues with the pace of things. If these four strips were updating individually on your regular schedule, I'm fairly certain I would've dropped it out of my bookmarks after strip #3. I'm sure the pace will start getting picked up a bit more later on, but as of right this very second, it seems like the title could be "Tales of the Mundane!" These first strips seem to be lacking in "the hook", that indefinable thing that makes me want to see what's coming up.

That said, despite the apparent dullness, the dialogue does sound good and realistic. Many a webcomic online has really stilted dialogue that reads somewhat robotically. Not so here. But in the end, if I have any real recommendations, it's to pick up the pace and cut to the chase (Hey, that rhymes! I'm totally putting it on a tee shirt now). Also, if the comic is just a slice of life strip about Writer Guy and his everyday life, I'm probably not your target audience anyway. There are people that love that, but I'm not one of them, so you can take my criticism with a grain of salt.

And even after all that ranting, I think I can safely say that it's superior to a great deal of webcomics online. Which just goes to show my relatively negative view of webcomics as a whole, but that's a whole other topic...

(And just like that, John's comics go suspiciously unsnarked for the rest of eternity.)

I disagree. I don't think a webcomic has to "hook" its readers immediately (like print comics do, for obvious reasons). Right now I've no idea where the story will go, but I like the art and I like the writer, and that's enough to keep me reading a while. If I'm still not hooked a month from now, *that's* a problem.

I believe Eric and Greg are off to a promising start.

Anal-retentive site designs, weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs. Rates reasonable. LJ address works.

Happy webcartoonisting! I've looked forward to Gossamer Commons since its coming was foretold, and thus far I'm intrigued. And kudos to M. Holkan as well.
