Right here -- this is the point where I'm going to Hell.

...it's Easter.

It's Easter... and Johnny Hart has died.

Oh my God, the jokes write themselves.

Well, at least you won't go alone. :)

My wife:

"He'll be back in three days."

And you wonder why I love her.

As long as B.C. isn't....

Mere death can't stop the worst comics. Especially not the worst comics that are pretty much written by God.

That's a pretty mean thing to say about God, isn't it?

I don't know. Look at what he did to Job. BC could just be a test for the rest of us.

We're going to need a bigger handbasket.

Hart's one of those guys who tragically died too late. He could have been remembered as a brilliant comic writer cut down in his prime, rather than as a crazy religious coot finally gone to meet his favorite topic and good riddance.

I'm reminded of Charles Schultz' death and the many tributes from comic strippers and comic book artists that resulted.

And I'm wondering what could be produced to commemorate Johnny Hart.

Specifically, by Randy Milholland.

That son of a bitch.

I have my calendar marked for the day in 2008 he would have had gone fifty years never missing a daily, beating Schulz out by about six months. (Yes, I realize I'm the last person to care, but there you are.) And he goes and does this. Fucking Christian modesty.

But Schulz only did this with one strip. Hart did it with two. So if you go by that, Hart's been doing it almost twice as long as Schulz did....

Ahhh, but Sparky drew his comic. Hart didn't draw either of his at least most of the time.

It was my impression that Hart wrote and drew BC. Did he have a ghost artist?

I'm sorry -- he did write and drew BC. Parker was Wizard of Id only.

Say what you will about his work, but the dude died at his drafting table. I mean, seriously, what a way to go, drawing comics until your dying breath!

Agreed. I have to concede the commitment to his craft, whatever my personal opinions of the quality of said work.

Will we be seeing a snark about this?
Demiurgent
[info]demiurgent at 2007-04-09 14:41 (UTC) (Link)
Probably not. I don't have a solid enough sense of perspective on this. I mean, on the one hand he was a fifty year veteran of cartooning, with many classic strips behind him and tremendous success and influence on the form.

On the other hand, I neither liked his strips nor -- as time went on -- the man himself. And I have a hard time "just saying something nice" about a man like him. I don't think a commemorative I could write would have the appropriate balance.

Heh, Gene Weingarten was asked the same question and gave a response similar to yours on a Washington Post chat.
