Whistling in the Dark
There is Only One Thing That I Blog...
Maybe I just don't get it. But then, I got me a woman, so maybe I can't.

I don't really grok the Valentine's hating.
Oh, I fully understand not having a significant other and feeling like a day like today rubs your face in it. (Though loudly complaining about the fact that there is a Valentine's Day on the basis of not having a Valentine seems oddly like saying I shouldn't eat cashews because you don't have any fucking cashews. I mean, I'm sorry you don't have cashews but that really has no bearing on my life.) But the folks who truly hate the holiday because of... well, heterosexuality and conspicuous consumption, I guess....
I just don't get it.
From the time I was in Kindergarten until at least the 6th grade, we did Valentine's Day at the school. We did it with construction paper and markers and maybe -- maybe -- little chalk candy hearts, and the expectation was you made valentines for everyone in your class and gave them to everyone in your class. We all had a little basket of construction paper which we made and you went one by one and dropped off the bits of paper, and then you brought them home. You gave them to the girls and you gave them to the boys. If you wanted to get cards, you got them in a bulk pack for the same purpose.
I've never gotten anyone jewelry for valentine's day. I've done flowers before, but I enjoy flowers. I like sending them to people. I sent some to Weds because I like it. I got her a stuffed animal, too -- but I buy her stuffed animals like some kind of stuffed animal fiend. When I was at her place over the weekend, I kissed her, hugged her, and handed her a plush rabbit. It's cute and fun and pleasant.
I had several girls at the school cheerfully wish me well for valentine's day. And then turn around and do the same for everyone else in the area. To them, it was a day to be cheerful and a little flirtatious (not with me -- I am The Man -- but certainly with their classmates) and have a good time.
If you have no inclination or interest in spending money on Valentine's day, that's fine. If you don't want to be involved, that's fine too. But being outraged at it? Truly offended at it? And think I shouldn't enjoy it?
I just don't get it.
Regardless, hope you have a good day, whether it's construction-paper motivated or not.
